This particular scheme is only open to NWSSDTP students whose funding commenced before August 2024. Those whose funding commenced after September 2024 may undertake internships but should refer instead to the Research in Practice Placement Scheme.

NWSSDTP students can apply for additional funding, and a funded studentship extension, to undertake an internship. NWSSDTP-funded students can apply to undertake an internship during their PhD – master’s students are not eligible to apply. Internships should not take place during the first three months of the PhD, and any internships taking place in the final year of the studentship must be completed at least three months prior to the original end date of the studentship.

The guidance relates to internship opportunities that have been developed by students for themselves. The NWSSDTP also publicises opportunities to undertake internships that have been pre-designed via the monthly NWSSDTP Newsletter, by email and via Bluesky.

Deadlines

There are three deadlines per year for Internship Funding Applications to be submitted. It is not possible to apply outside of these deadlines. It will take up to three weeks for applications to be reviewed and outcomes communicated, so please ensure you apply well in advance of your planned activity.

2025/26

• Friday 7th November 2025 (last possible deadline for activity taking place January – April 2026)
• Friday 6th February 2026 (last possible deadline for activity taking place May – August 2026)
• Friday 5th June 2026 (last possible deadline for activity taking place September – December 2026)

2026/27

• Friday 6th November 2026 (last possible deadline for activity taking place January – April 2027)
• Friday 5th February 2027 (last possible deadline for activity taking place May – August 2027)
