Ethical and legal issues

By the end of the PhD, all NWSSDTP-funded students are expected to be aware of issues relating to ethics, confidentiality and legality in the context of their particular research areas and related research design options.

The ESRC Framework for Research Ethics sets out the ESRC’s approach, aims and methods in ethical evaluation and conduct of research, including doctorate-level research: https://www.ukri.org/councils/esrc/guidance-for-applicants/research-ethics-guidance/framework-for-research-ethics/. Research students should be aware of this document as well as ethical review requirements of their institutions and subject associations as part of their core training.

Students are also covered by the UKRI governance of good research practice policy, and all funded students should be made aware of this guidance. Please see the UKRI website for further information: https://www.ukri.org/news/ukri-publishes-governance-of-good-research-practice-policy/.
